Faculty Awards

Faculty awards are presented to those deemed as innovative, collaborative, going above and beyond to help students, garnering international recognition, and promoting diversity.

The “Building Bridges” Excellence Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2007. The award is presented each year to a non-COE faculty member at The Ohio State University whose collaborative work with the College of Engineering has advanced the excellence, impact and reputation of both colleges and the University. The recipient of the award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The Buckeye Engineering Women in Executive Leadership (BEWEL) "Leadership in Innovation Award" is presented to a junior or mid-career faculty member in the College of Engineering who demonstrates excellence in leadership, innovation, research, and scholarship, and is committed to the advancement of women in engineering. The recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Charles Ellison MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching is named for the late Dean of the College of Engineering. The award is presented annually to faculty members who have demonstrated, in a superior manner, their interest in and willingness to help students, their interest in improvement of the high reputation of the College of Engineering, and their outstanding teaching ability.

The Clara M. and Peter L. Scott Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education was established in 1987 by Clara M. and Peter L. Scott (B.S. Electrical Engineering '49 DRH '95). Recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award was established in 2007 in honor of David McCarthy, retired senior director of development in the College of Engineering. The McCarthy Award recognizes the contributions of College of Engineering junior faculty and staff to create more innovative and effective teaching and learning. Recipient(s) of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Dean's Award for Distinguished Outreach Achievements was established in 2015. The award is presented each year to an individual faculty member who has demonstrated significant and longstanding achievement of positive community impact through outreach activities or programs within the College of Engineering.

The Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Lecturer was established in 2015. The award is presented each year to an individual lecturer, senior lecturer or other auxiliary faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in their teaching within the College of Engineering.

The Dean’s Meritorious Service to Students Award recognizes an individual outside The Ohio State University community for exemplary service to students of the College of Engineering and/or the Knowlton School of Architecture. This award recognizes the support to engineering or architecture students through classroom presentations, internship and co-op opportunities, scholarships and student organizations or activity support.

The Distinction in Safety Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2019 and recognizes a faculty member or research scientist who has demonstrated a longstanding commitment and contribution to safety. The recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Faculty Diversity Excellence Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2007. The award is presented each year to an individual faculty member or team of faculty for actions and accomplishments that support the College’s priority goal of achieving excellence through diversity and creating an environment and organizational culture in which all individuals are accepted, respected and valued. Recipient(s) of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Faculty Mentoring Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2013. The award is presented each year to an individual faculty member in the College of Engineering for demonstrated excellence in the mentoring of one or more early-career faculty members within the College. Recipient(s) of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Harrison Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education was established in 1982 by Doris A. and Stanley E. Harrison (B.S.E.E. '58). The recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

The Honda-Ohio State Partnership Award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions towards promoting and strengthening the Partnership, in areas of education, research and outreach as related to the transportation field. The recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The Innovators Award for the College of Engineering was established by the Engineering Experiment Station in 2007. The award is presented each year to an individual or team of faculty and/or research scientists who best demonstrate innovation in the development of a product and/or technology originating from the Ohio State research enterprise. Innovation is defined as the act, process or product that creates a new dimension of performance. This award recognizes the achievements of an individual or team whose innovation has successfully translated the research emanating from our laboratories into new products and/or technologies that can be used by the public at large. Recipient(s) of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The College of Engineering will recognize the interdisciplinary research contributions of faculty and research staff by awarding the Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award. Funds for these awards are made possible by an endowment established by John H. and Mildred C. Lumley. The award(s) will be presented at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet to a team of faculty and/or research scientists who have demonstrated significant research collaboration that cuts across departmental or discipline boundaries.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The College of Engineering will recognize the research contributions and productivity over the last five years (2018-2022) of faculty and research scientists by presenting the Lumley Research Award at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet. Funds for these awards are made possible by an endowment established by John H. and Mildred C. Lumley.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The Mentor of the Next Generation award for the College of Engineering was established in 2022. The award will be presented each year to a COE faulty member who has engaged in exceptional mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars. The recipient of the award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

Award Criteria, Awardees, and Nomination Form

The Ralph L. Boyer Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Engineering Innovation was established in 1988 by Ralph L. Boyer, a 1924 Ohio State graduate in mechanical engineering. The recipient of this award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.
