Mentor of the Next Generation Award

The Mentor of the Next Generation award for the College of Engineering was established in 2022. The award will be presented each year to a COE faulty member who has engaged in exceptional mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars. The recipient of the award will be honored at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet.

Criteria

This award is open to Tenure Track, Clinical and Research Faculty.

The Mentor of the Next Generation Award recognizes a faculty member who has engaged in exceptional mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars. The recipient of this award must have demonstrated a desire to encourage and implement practices such as enhancing networking and career planning skills, working with student professional societies, leading extracurricular student engineering teams, and will have made an active effort to help their trainees prioritize professional development, work towards future career goals, or create career plans.

Nominations

Faculty, staff, and students in the College of Engineering may make nominations in the form of a nominating letter (two pages or less). The following aspects must be included and provide examples of each:

  • Clearly describe the nominee's mentoring characteristics and philosophies, and how the nominee demonstrates these qualities.
  • Describe how the nominee has encouraged and implemented practices such as enhancing networking and career planning skills, and how the nominee has made an active effort to help their trainee(s) work towards future career goals or create career plans.
  • How has your nominee discussed the importance of professional development? Has the nominee encouraged their trainee(s) to attend events or provided relevant experiences for their trainee(s)?
  • Explain in detail how the nominee has served as a mentor. For example, how long have they served as a mentor? How many trainees has the nominee mentored? What are some examples of how this mentor's trainees have reached certain accomplishments under the mentor's guidance? etc.
  • Describe and provide examples of how the nominee has been intentional about increasing the diversity of their research team and provide an inclusive and equitable work environment for everyone.

IMPORTANT: only one nomination package will be accepted per nominee, and only two pages or less. Please coordinate with anyone else who is interested in nominating the same person and submit materials as a single PDF. Include a proposed citation (25 words or less) at the bottom of the nomination letter. Include for all nominators: name, department, and status (faculty, staff, undergrad student, grad student, postdoc scholar.) Document title should be in the format "Nominee First and Last Name FY24 Mentor Next Generation." The committee may disqualify nominations that do not meet this requirement.

Selection Committee

The College of Engineering Faculty Awards Committee will evaluate nominations and make a recommendation to the Dean of the College of Engineering, who selects the award recipient.

Deadline

The application materials need to be submitted electronically and must be submitted by January 05, 2024.
